Frank Lampard has surged ahead as the favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Everton manager, with the Toffees board set to make their decision imminently.

Lampard and Vitor Pereira remain the two most serious contenders to replace Rafael Benitez as permanent boss at Goodison Park, although the Telegraph report that caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson is still in the frame, somewhat surprisingly.

All three are reportedly due to be spoken to on Friday and Everton chiefs wnat to make their appointment on the same day.

It will be the third time they have spoken to Lampard after the Chelsea legend was interviewed for a second time on Thursday, in another unexpected step in the recruitment process.

A decision will not be made until Friday, but the bookmakers believe Lampard is by far the most likely of the three men to be handed the job.

At the time of writing on Thursday evening Lampard is priced at 2/13 with Betfair to be Everton’s next permanent manager, with Pereira lagging behing at 4/1.

Ferguson is out at 10/1, which suggests he is not really considered a serious contender at this stage, with Derby County manager Wayne Rooney just behind him at 12/1.

Clearly the bookmakers do not always get it right, but with a decision expected within 24 hours, they have made their choice on who will lead the Toffees when the Premier League returns after the brief January hiatus.

Everton are next in action in the FA Cup on 5 February at home to Brentford, returning to Premier League action in a big game at Newcastle on 8 February.
