BREAKING NEWS: Frankie Dettori, 52, earns a fairytale NINTH Gold Cup win before his retirement as Courage Mon Ami beats favourite Coltrane at Royal Ascot
To add to one of the greatest days in the track’s long history, Frankie Dettori won the Gold Cup aboard Courage Mon Ami.
Riding in the race for the final time before his retirement at the end of the year, Dettori was at his brilliant best as his unbeaten John and Thady Gosden-trained mount got the better of favourite Coltrane.
Dettori said before savouring a tremendous reception: ‘Unbelievable! I thought it was a bridge too far from handicaps to Group One level, but it was the perfect race.
‘He’s still a baby so when Coltrane came back, he picked up again.’
