With an eye toward 2023, Pinterest has released its annual forecast of trends based on an analysis its AI has conducted on billions of searches taking place on the idea-sharing site. The company claims that in the last three years, 80% of its predictions have come true. Here’s a look at what to expect in the new year.
Gen Z
Gen Z is emerging as savvy savers hailing cash as king having graduated into economic uncertainty where hiring freezes and sweeping layoffs in certain sectors have raised anxiety among the newest entrants of the workforce.
For dating, pricey happy hours are expected to give way to experiences that cost little to nothing, like biking by the beach. Because the best things in life are free, or almost free, searches for “date picnic ideas,” “aquarium dates,” “museum dates” and “bookstore dates” have been up two to four times over last year.
For travel, scenic rail adventures might just be the next hot getaway. Train bragging has been trending along with searches for “Indian railway station photography,” “interrailing Europe aesthetic” and “train quotes travel.”
For fashion, the look is romcom core inspired by romantic comedies like Clueless, The Holiday and Sex in the City from the late nineties and early aughts. Popular searches have been “2000s girl,” “summer outfits vintage 90s,” “cool girl aesthetic outfits,” “pink miniskirt outfit” and “rhinestone dress.” Pinterest is also predicting a comeback in rave culture with a big jump in searches for “Berlin rave fashion” and “house music outfits.”
Millennials
For those tying the knot, weddings awash in smoldering earth tones might be all the rage as people have been searching for “burnt orange wedding theme” up nearly 700% with “terracotta wedding bridesmaid dresses” and “copper saree” also up dramatically. And for those with a baby on the way, the fourth trimester is expected to bring a lot more pampering with surging interest in “postpartum gifts.”
The gamification of high-yield savings accounts is expected to be a thing as interest rates continue to rise. Searches for “biweekly saving challenges” have been hitting the radar with people crafting do-it-yourself competitions with rewards to create incentives to sock away money.
Gen X
For fitness, watch for a return to “primal movement” following an increase in searches for basic workouts featuring push-ups, pull-downs, bridges, lunges, squats and planks. Attention to return-to-office sitting injuries is also being forecasted with searches for “neck hump exercises” and “mobility stretches” up 140% to 210%.
For house decor, what’s old might be new again with interest peaking in “eclectic interior design vintage” and “mixing modern with antique furniture.”
Puppy pool parties are also expected to make a splash with “mini pool ideas” being searched with “DIY dog areas in backyard.”
Boomers
Boomers are expected to double down on sustainable living with “drought tolerant landscape design” and “rain barrels ideas beautiful” top of mind.
Hobbies like origami and journaling are also likely to be part of the psyche as searches on “how to make paper rings,” “writing therapy” and “art journal therapy” jumping as high as 3755%.
And a YOLO mindset might be taking over as big celebrations are believed to be in the works with “100th birthday party ideas” and “golden anniversary party” trending as well.
Findings were based on data through September 2022. Pinterest will be at CES sharing more from the study.
