This is Djokovic’s 23rd Grand Slam title and third title win at the Roland-Garros. The 36-year-old defeated title favourite and top seed Carlos Alcazar in the semi-final in four sets.
Djokovic, who reclaims the number one ranking with his latest triumph, went past Nadal and Steffi Graf’s tally of 22 Grand Slam titles, equalled Serena Williams’ tally and is now just one behind record-holder Margaret Court’s 24 major trophies.
At 36 years and 20 days, the Serbian has become the oldest Roland-Garros men’s champion and is the first man in history to win each of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least three times.
In front of a star-studded audience that included Tom Brady – who was in Djokovic’s box – France and PSG star Kylian Mbappe, and just retired Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Hugh Grant and Olivier Giroud, Djokovic picked up a fifth win over fourth seeded Ruud in as many meetings.
The first set between Djokovic entered the tie-breaker and lasted for one hour and 21 minutes. However, 24-year-old Ruud could earn just a point as Djokovic took a 1-0 lead.
The rampant Serb breezed past Ruud with a 6-3 win in the second set. Ruud showed grit and fought neck-to-neck until Djokovic broke him in the 11th game and scripted history moments later.
