World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz’s French Open trajectory remain on a collision course with Novak Djokovic too with an identical 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over World No. 17 Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The title-favourite duo now need to win one match for the much-awaited semifinal clash.
“Well, I’m proud of it, but my attention is already on the next match,” said Djokovic, who will play No. 11 Karen Khachanov. “I know what my goal is here. I’m trying to stay, mentally, on the course and of course not look too far.”
Novak Djokovic will have a chance to overtake his arch-rival Rafael Nadal with another Grand Slam title win as he will overtake the southpaw in the Major title count to all-time record lead of 23. Speaking of his rival, Djokovic said he hopes to see him back in the court next year fit and healthy.
“I really hope that his rehabilitation process can go well and that we can see him next season. He’s so important for our game, on and off the court, one of the greatest legends of tennis in the history of the game,” Djokovic said. “We want to see a healthy Rafa, no question about it.”
His Tuesday’s rival Khachanov defeated Lorenzo Sonego in a five-set battle 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7), 6-1. This will be the 10th meeting between the duo with Djokovic leading the head-to-head 8-1 over the Russian.
“He’s one of the toughest tasks, toughest opponents,” Khachanov said about Djokovic, “and you cannot count him out.”
