French Open: SA wheelchair stars Kgothatso Montjane and Donald Ramphadi into finals

South Africa’s wheelchair tennis stars Kgothatso Montjane and Donald Ramphadi both triumphed in their doubles semi-finals at the French Open, booking their places in the finals to be held at Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday.

Montjane, the women’s world No 8 and a 2022 Roland Garros finalist, rebounded from a loss in the women’s singles quarter-finals earlier this week.

Partnered with Japan’s Yui Kamiji, Montjane displayed exceptional teamwork in their semi-final against Pauline Deroulede and Emmanuel Morch from France.

The top-seeded duo delivered a commanding performance, overpowering their opponents 6-1, 6-2.

In the women’s doubles final, Montjane and Kamiji will face the unseeded duo of Diede de Groot from the Netherlands and Maria Florencia Moreno from Argentina.

Meanwhile, Donald Ramphadi and his British partner Andy Lapthorne caused an upset in the men’s quad doubles semi-finals, defeating the Dutch top seeds Sam Schroder and Niels Vink 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.

It was sweet revenge for Ramphadi who was knocked out by Schroder in the first round of the quad singles event.

Ramphadi, 29, who reached his career-high ranking of No 4 this week, advanced to his first Roland Garros final after only his second year at the clay court Grand Slam.

Ramphadi and Lapthorne will face the second-seeded pair of Heath Davidson and Robert Shaw on Saturday.

The match featuring Ramphadi and Lapthorne is scheduled to commence at 11:00 (SA time) on Saturday on Court 13, followed by Montjane and Kamiji’s final on the same court.
