Freo reveal plan to DITCH all-white clash strip

The AFL will be required to rule on jumpers for next season’s first western derby, after Fremantle signalled their desire to wear their purple home guernseys in both home and away derbies.

The Dockers have announced a change to their all-white away strip for next season. They now want to mix their purple jumper with white shorts for away fixtures, as long as the purple doesn’t create a clash with the opposition.

Fremantle are hoping to wear their purple guernsey in the round three derby, which is a West Coast home game.

The Dockers are yet to receive answers on which teams will be considered a clash, but they are confident that purple will be allowed against the Eagles’ royal blue home uniform.

Fremantle previously wore predominantly purple jumpers in derbies before the advent of their all-white strip in 2011.

The AFL determined that Melbourne’s navy blue and the Western Bulldogs’ royal blue did not clash ahead of this year’s grand final at Optus Stadium, with the lower-ranked Dogs allowed to wear their home jumper rather than their all-white strip.

The Dockers may still be required to wear their all-white clash strip in away games against Adelaide, Essendon, Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond next year due to the dark-coloured opposition.

Fremantle’s new policy marks a change in direction, after the club was offered the chance to wear their trademark purple guernsey in their debut grand final appearance in 2013 but declined.

Having been forced to wear white shorts against Hawthorn, the administration at the time decided the Dockers should wear their matching white jumper for the historic occasion.

Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick said the club wanted to take its purple identity nation-wide.

“Since 1995 we’ve proudly identified with purple as our primary colour and this decision allows us to show this pride more often,” Garlick said.

“Our purple chevron jumper shouldn’t just be how we present ourselves to our WA fans, it should be worn across Australia as often as possible.”

The Dockers also plan to bring back another retro jumper next year, having worn their inaugural green away jumper in a one-off match last season.
