Front door colours that could deter buyers from buying your home

Research by Nested, the modern estate agent, has found that traditional brown front doors have fallen out of favour.

It comes as the estate agency found that a whopping 50 percent of homebuyers admit that the colour of a front door will influence their decision to buy a home.

Before entering a property, the first thing prospective buyers see is the front door so it’s no wonder it plays such a central role in the feel of a home.

The overall aesthetic of the door, including the material, era, and design features, can dictate the overall feel of a home.

However, one of the key elements of a front door that people find especially important is the door’s colour.

To find out what impact a front door’s colour has on buyers, Nested commissioned a survey of 1,000 UK homebuyers.

The results revealed that a staggering 94 percent admit the colour of a front door has an impact on the overall appeal of a home’s external aesthetic.

Furthermore, half of buyers confirmed door colour has a degree of influence over their decision to either buy a home or look elsewhere.

But some colours are more in favour than others, according to the research. The most preferred door colour is grey, with 18 percent of buyers naming the shade as their number one choice.

The preferred colour suggests that buyers are looking for a more modern aesthetic when searching for homes.

Other popular choices included black (18 percent), blue (16 percent), green (16 percent) and white (11 percent).

However, one colour, in particular, should be avoided by sellers, according to the survey.

The least popular door colour was brown (three percent) which suggests that buyers dislike a natural wood-finish door or styles like these.

This colour preference is all part of creating the right overall aesthetic for a home, and when this aesthetic appeals to buyers, 41 percent say they would pay a price premium in order to secure a property.

Alice Bullard, managing director at Nested, the modern estate agent, said making a good overall first impression is of the “utmost importance” to buyers.

She said: “It’s strange to think that something so simple as the colour of a front door could sway someone’s decision to buy a home and the reality is that the door itself can be easily changed, but it’s the overall first impression it adds to that is of the utmost importance when looking to attract a buyer.

“Particularly in the current market, where buyers have the upper hand, drawing them in with a good initial impression of your home is going to maximise your chances of selling.

“If they’re deterred at the first hurdle it’s likely to dent their enthusiasm throughout the rest of the viewing and, ultimately, can result in your home sitting on the market for a longer period of time.

“So if you are struggling to sell, it’s worth considering if your front door needs a little TLC as it’s a cost effective step to take, particularly if it boosts your chances of securing a sale.”
