Full list of countries that are on the red list after the UK travel rules have tightened up due to the Omicron variant including new PCR test requirements for anyone returning from abroad

There are new travel rules including red list additions for Brits

New UK travel rules have come into force in a bid to curb the spread of the Omicron variant, including new PCR Covid test rules for those returning to the UK from abroad and pre-departure test, as well as changes to the red list.

Back in November the government had removed all countries from the red list, but warned at the time that countries could be added back on depending on the Covid situation.

Due to Omicron, in recent weeks a total of 11 countries have been added back to the red list, including winter sun holidays hotspot South Africa.

Under the red list rules, travellers returning to the UK will be required to stay in a quarantine hotel for 10 nights.

We take a look below at the full list of red list countries, as well as the wider rules and what happens if your holiday is affected by a change in restrictions.

What countries are on the red list?

At the time of writing there are 11 countries on the red list, which applies to anyone returning to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There are:

  1. Angola
  2. Botswana
  3. Eswatini
  4. Lesotho
  5. Malawi
  6. Mozambique
  7. Namibia
  8. Nigeria
  9. South Africa
  10. Zambia
  11. Zimbabwe

Due to the developing Omicron situation, so while the list above is correct currently, it is subject to change. If you have a trip planned to a destination, or you’re thinking of going abroad, always check the latest Foreign Office advice for your destination before booking or going on a trip.

We also have a guide on what happens if your holiday goes on the red list including your rights to getting your money back.

What are the red list travel rules?

Only British/Irish nationals and those with UK residence rights will be allowed to enter the UK from a red list country.

If you’re returning to the UK from a red list country, you’ll need to do the following;

  • Take a pre-departure test within 48 hours before you travel
  • Book a quarantine hotel package which includes two Covid-19 PCR tests
  • Fill out a passenger locator form

Quarantine hotel costs include £2,285 for an adult in one room, and £1,430 per extra adult or child over 11. For children aged 5-11, the cost is £325.

These rules apply no matter what your Covid vaccination status. You can also get more information in the government red list guidance.

If you’re returning from a country which isn’t on the red list, there are new travel rules in place.

For a start, anyone returning to the UK will need to take a pre-departure test within 48 hours before travel, which can be a PCR or lateral flow test.

Once back in the UK, the rules differ depending on your vaccination status.

If you’re vaccinated, you’ll need to then self-isolate for two days and take a PCR test on day two, where a negative result releases you from self-isolation.

If you’re unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, you’ll need to self-isolate for 10 days in the UK and take PCR tests on days two and eight.
