Pochettino had pulled off a slight surprise by naming a young starting XI with an average age of just 19, including new signings Nicolas Jackson, Malo Gusto and Diego Moreira in the team.
But it was a long-serving starlet, Ian Maatsen, who made the immediate impression by grabbing a first-half brace. The 21-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Burnley, slid underneath Ben Foster after just three minutes following a mazy run from Jackson.
The pair then combined again with a neat one-two and Maatsen swept home into the bottom corner to double the lead, and they looked good for a third before they were denied by the referee, prompting Pochettino’s rant.
But overall, he would have been happy with how his side performed in their first game under his management.
