Carl Froch has warned Tyson Fury that he might get booed by his home crowd after his recent comments about Oleksandr Usyk. The former super-middleweight world champion has described Fury’s recent remarks as ‘below the belt’.
Fury and Usyk are currently finalising the paperwork for their proposed undisputed heavyweight title fight on April 29 at London’s Wembley Stadium. During the build-up, both men have engaged in an entertaining back-and-forth over social media with a number of insults hurled each way.
Usyk poked fun at Fury’s ‘greedy belly’ while the Mancunian took aim at his adversary’s ‘gappy teeth’. But Froch believes Fury went too far in shaming Usyk’s appearance and claims he may have even turned the fans against him.
“The problem with Fury now is that he’s maybe turned some pressure on himself, as he’s turned the fans against him,” he said on his YouTube channel ‘Froch Talks Fighting’. “All the shenanigans and slagging off Usyk in the build-up – I think it was unsavoury.”
“Why are you talking about a man’s gappy teeth and calling him ugly? You don’t to make personal insults, I think it’s below the belt and I don’t like to see that.”
“I’ll be interested to see who’s getting cheered and who’s getting booed on the night. We know fans can be fickle! Fans can be very mean, and Tyson Fury has gotten a bit carried away with his mouth.”
Negotiations for the four-belt shoot-out have been ongoing since Fury’s most recent victory over Derek Chisora four months ago but both parties are still yet to close the deal. It is understood that the financial side was the main reason for the hold-up with both parties arguing over the purse split.
Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk insisted that he would not budge on anything less than a 50-50 split for the showdown considering that his client has three of the four major sanctioning body belts in his possession. However, Fury was adamant that the contest would not take place unless he received a 70 per cent lion’s share of the prize pot given that the fight is being staged in his home country and that he is the bigger draw.
Eventually, Usyk’s side gave in to Fury’s demands and we are now expecting an official announcement in the coming days.
