PHARMACIES in Italy are charging tourists as much as €50 for antigen tests – while locals can get them for less than €20.
Brits currently on holiday in Italy will need a Covid test before returning to the UK as part of the new travel restrictions.
This means families could end up paying up to €200 extra just to return to the UK, not including the second test needed after arriving back in the UK.
Travel writer Julia Buckley shared the images of a pharmacy in Italy advertising the costs on social media.
She wrote: “Amazing. Antigen tests €19 for Italians and residents, €50 for tourists. Very ‘kind and helpful’, a good thing to ‘get away with’.”
Images show PCR tests costing a whopping €112, while antigen tests are €50.
The cheaper €19 price is only for Italians who have the tessera sanitaria, a health insurance card.
One person asked on Twitter: “I wouldn’t have thought it’s legal to charge other EU citizens more is it? Although non-EU is probably fine.”
The UK is no longer in the EU, so this also wouldn’t apply for Brits.
Others said some pharmacies were offering cheaper ones, with some for a little as €22, so it isn’t clear why this one was charging the higher price.
It isn’t the only confusion for Brits wanting to head to Italy.
Yesterday, a passenger with plans to fly from Edinburgh to Italy revealed that Ryanair has told travellers they must have a PCR test to fly to Italy, despite them accepting the cheaper antigen tests.
Other people have experienced the same thing, with many taking to Twitter to demand answers from Ryanair.
One person wrote: “Hi, can you confirm that the email sent to travellers from the UK to Italy saying only PCR tests are accepted is in error and that antigen tests within 24 hours will also be accepted (as per the requirements sent by Italy)?”
Another person added: “Why are you providing incorrect information to those travelling to Italy from the UK?
“Italy accepts an antigen taken within 24 hours of entering the country. Please correct this.”
