Futuristic Tesla Cybertruck enters production ahead of autumn 2023 launch

Tesla has announced that production of their Cybertruck has started in the company’s Texas factory, ahead of its proposed launch in autumn 2023.

The company posted a photo onto their social media pages, showing the workers of the Giga Texas factory standing around the first model to come off the production line.

The plant, also known as Gigafactory Five, was built in 2020 and currently produces the Model Y, which was the best-selling car in the UK during June 2023.

American motorists are also able to place an order for the Cybertruck via Tesla’s website, which requires a $100 (£77) deposit.

However, here in the UK, the website only features general information on the model, and a link to its mailing list.

The Tesla Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019, where it caused a stir due to its incredibly boxy styling that CEO Elon Musk said was inspired by classic films such as Blade Runner.

However, the initial launch did not go completely to plan, when the models “Armor Glass” smashed, after the Cybertruck’s lead designer, Franz von Holzhausen, throw a metal ball at it.

In addition, whilst the Tesla Cybertruck was initially touted for a 2021 release, the Covid pandemic pushed it back two years, allowing competition to catch up.

Nevertheless, the Tesla Cybertruck still appears incredibly futuristic, helped by its flat, near featureless, front end and tall windscreen.

It is also set to be incredibly capable, with top of the range model reportedly being capable of going from 0-60mph in just 2.9 seconds and towing up to 6350kg, although not at the same time.

In its most powerful form, the Cybertruck is also set to feature a range of 500 miles and a one megawatt charging speed that can cut the time of filling up.

However, there is still a lot surrounding the Tesla Cybertruck that is currently unclear, including whether it will officially sell in the UK.

For American buyers, prices have yet to be confirmed, with Tesla initially stating a target of $39,990 (£30,900) for the entry level model.

In July 2023, Elon might have dropped a hint, however, when he posted that the $49,995 (£38,700) price tag of the electric Ford F150 Lightning Pickup was “somewhat expensive”.
