Nigel Winterburn has drawn comparisons between Gabriel Jesus and Arsenal icon Ian Wright after the Gunners’ new signing netted a hat-trick in a 6-0 pre-season win over Sevilla on Saturday.
The Brazil international has had a fast start to life in north London after his £45million move from Manchester City.
Jesus’ hat-trick takes his tally to seven goals in pre-season and Gunners fans will be hoping he can keep up that form with the 2022/23 Premier League campaign under a week away.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring in the Emirates Cup clash, reacting quickly to slot home from a loose ball in the box.
Jesus was on the scoresheet again not long later as he swept in from Gabriel Martinelli’s cross to make it 2-0 inside 15 minutes.
Bukayo Saka got the second and third goals in the first half, before Jesus completed his hat-trick with another smart finish in the second half.
Substitute Eddie Nketiah completed the scoring late on to end a successful pre-season for the Gunners.
While on club media commentary duty for the game, Arsenal legend Winterburn admitted Jesus reminded him of former Gunners striker Wright.
‘He knows that this ball is going to drop down into an area and Jesus is the first one to reactm,’ said Winterburn.
‘Exactly like Ian Wright, he loves scoring goals.’
‘Gabriel Jesus – absolutely sensational,’ added Winterburn after declaring the striker man of the match.
‘Not only has he got a hat-trick this afternoon, but his pace, his power, his desire to be in the right area when the ball breaks loose has been incredible to watch this afternoon.
‘So he is my man of the match.’
