The Galaxy has found its replacement for Julian Araujo with the acquisition of defender Lucas Calegari.

Calegari joins the Galaxy on loan from Brazilian club Fluminense FC. The loan comes with an option to make it permanent.

Calegari, 21, will occupy the U-22 Initiative roster slot, which Araujo occupied before his transfer to Barcelona for a reported $4 million.

“Lucas is a young and talented fullback with significant experience at a high level already,” Galaxy coach and sporting director Greg Vanney said. “We look forward to his contributions to the success of the team and supporting his continued growth as a player.”

Calegari joined the youth academy at Fluminense as a 12-year-old. He made his debut with the senior club in 2020. He has made 80 appearances across all competitions for Fluminense. He’s also played in the Copa Libertadores.

At the international level, Calegari has made appearances with Brazil’s U-17 and U-20 national teams.

He will be added to the roster upon receiving his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate. Until then, expect Kelvin Leerdam to start at right back for the Galaxy.
