The Wednesday Inbox imagines a new Metroid game made by Reutrnal developer Housemarque, as a reader advises giving up on Gears Of War.

It’s only January but we’re starting to get into a busy part of the year already and like many I’m expecting Elden Ring to be showered with praise when it comes out next month, since everyone seems to have enjoyed the preview and FromSoftware’s excellent reputation remains unblemished. The problem is though, I still don’t know if I should really get it.
I’ve tried Dark Souls and Bloodborne and while I can see the quality, they’re just too difficult for me. I did get into them several years after they first came out though, so that felt quite demotivating, with none of my friends talking about it. With Elden Ring though I could get in at the ground level, which seems like a good idea.
I do wish they’d put in an easy mode though. I know the purists think this would ruin everything but to me an easy mode would still seem hard, I’m willing to bet. I do get that we shouldn’t be the ones telling an artist what to do with their own creation, but I know I’m missing out with something really special with these games and I really wish that wasn’t the case.

NinSon Corporation
There’s a few reasons why a Sony and Nintendo merger would be a good thing. Certainly VR but probably the main benefit would be Nintendo’s ability to get Housemarque to make Metroid 4. Returnal feels Metroidesque and the gunplay plus exploration is already absolutely fantastic. It would be a perfect partnership and a great way to bring back Samus into the 3D realm.
So get to it SonyNinty/NinSon/EndoNy/OnyEndo or MiyaKutaragiMoto (ShigeruKen sounds too much like a Street Fighter special move).
Wonk
GC: Not that it really matters but Metroid Fusion is Metroid 4 and Metroid Dread is Metroid 5.
No complaints
I have to agree with Phil’s overview of the whole Activision takeover by Microsoft.
Let’s put the boot on the other foot shall we and imagine Nintendo and its fans started crying foul play during the 32-bit era because of Sony’s financial muscle?
I suspect they would have been considered divas for stamping their feet because they felt the gaming market belonged to them.
Times they are a changing and this isn’t the end of gaming, people.
Strap yourselves in because this is going to be one hell of a long and bumpy ride.

Game Boy forever
I don’t know what I expected from a headline about GTA 5 running on a Game Boy but that was some really impressive tech. I don’t know why anyone would go to such effort to make such a thing work, but I was thoroughly entertained by the whole video.
On a mostly related note I am always surprised that Nintendo has never tried to reuse the Game Boy brand in any way. It’s still very famous and while it’s kind of silly and meaningless it’s a hell of a lot more reusable than DS.
I don’t know what they would reuse it for but maybe a line of streaming devices is the way to go? The idea of using a touchscreen instead of a joypad sounds like no fun at all to me but if you were to make a device especially for it, with proper controls, that would be useful, wouldn’t it? I bet Microsoft would encourage Nintendo to do it if they thought they could get xCloud on it.

Little bit of politics
Idea for a game: The Gray Report
You play as Sue Gray, going around Westminster interviewing members of the Conservative Party to see what they knew about the various parties.
It would be in the style of L.A. Noire, and you would have to work out who’s lying to you. Obviously BoJo is the final boss as you have to try and make him feel shame, by hammering the ’shame metre’ while dodging crazy right wing policies that are being thrown at you, to try and distract you/everyone from Partygate.
Right I’m off to pitch it to Microsoft…

Last hope
Two things struck me on reading the news about EA making three more Star Wars games, the first being that Respawn must be absolutely massive now that they’re doing these three games (well, two and a half) and Apex Legends on top of that.
The other thing is that this is going to make Titanfall 3 impossible probably forever. It’s probably going to be at least three years before all three games are out and by that time Titanfall 2 will be almost a decade old. Considering it wasn’t very successful the first time round I just don’t see another one ever getting the go ahead, as the number of people that care about it slowly dwindle.
The only hope is if Respawn start to put more overt references to the games into Apex Legends so that more people start to call for a new Titanfall. Given how minor the references have been so far though I can’t see that happening, which probably means Titanfall is now unofficially dead

Launch tie-in
Just a quick message to say that on Nintendo Store four new Pokémon amiibo have been added, although they are not currently in stock. I presume they might come into stock on or around the release of the new Pokémon game on Friday. When Metroid Dread came out various Metroid amiibo came into stock.

PS: In relation to Henshin Agogo, with the saving on Knack 2 on the PS Store, I’m hoping Sony do a Kickstarter to make Knack 3 as they did when Shenmue 3 was announced at the E3 conference a few years ago.
GC: Sony didn’t organise the Kickstarter, they just gave some money to get the game made.
Kicked out
Thanks for your articles covering board games, I’ve picked up a couple thanks to listings here, so I appreciate the curated coverage.
In your latest article you’ve listed the absolutely sexual looking upcoming Masters of the Universe game on Kickstarter.
When the Kickstarter launched I was distraught (not literally) that they weren’t shipping to Europe, so I forgot about it. Kickstarter then recommended it to me in a newsletter which I have to say I found to be a bit of a kick in the teeth, given I couldn’t get the damn thing shipped to me.
Now you kick me in the teeth again, the ghost of this game is following me round, teasing me that I am not cool enough to have any friends outside of the EU that I could ship it to. Indeed, I have no friends at all. I digress.
Do you or any readers know of any magical way to get hold of it in the UK? Excluding a cosmic key that is, they are nothing but trouble.
I have backed The Witcher and Marvel’s Dice Throne this year so it’s probably better for my wallet that I don’t have a way to get hold of it. But if was to choose between the three I would always choose to battle for the fate of Eternia over anything else, so I would love to get hold of it, if possible.

GC: We’ll ask Lucy to look into it for you, but it seems to be a licensing issue.
Inbox also-rans
I don’t want to say anything too crazy but maybe the reason Gears 5 didn’t blow up is because Gears Of War just seems a bit old hat now? Would that many people really care if it never came back?
Toadie
Whatever Sony is planning to reveal in the next month or so I hope they make it good. If it turns out to be some really overcomplicated scheme, like they tend to go for, I think it’s going to get ripped apart when compared to Game Pass.

This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Cranston, who asks would you still be interested in gaming if Sony and Nintendo were no longer involved?
The news that Microsoft is buying Activision Blizzard has changed everything, with many fearing that equally large companies like Google, Facebook, and Netflix will swoop in to buy the remaining third party publishers. If that happened, how would it affect your interest in gaming?
Do you worry about the increasing consolidation of gaming, where only a few number of giant companies own everything, or do you think it won’t change anything fundamental? What do you see as the most optimistic, and pessimistic, outcomes for the future of the games industry?
