With Lingard also dropped, Southgate explained that he’s selected players he thinks will get England results in this month’s fixtures.
“So continue to learn the game, continue to learn how to be a top professional, continue to strive to improve every day you’re on the training ground, and then, in the end, that will transfer itself into the matches,” Southgate added.
“It’s totally understandable that some of our younger players will be able to play very well against a certain level of opponent, but then against the really top teams, there’s still a step to go.
“There is competition for places and we’ve got to pick the people we think can get us the results, particularly this month to get us qualified for the World Cup.”
