Garoppolo out for season after foot injury suffered vs. Dolphins

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KRON) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is out for the season with a broken foot, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Garoppolo suffered the injury in the first quarter of the 49ers’ 33-17 home win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium.

Garoppolo, 31, will undergo foot surgery, per Shanahan. He completed 2-of-4 passes for 56 yards before being carted off the field.

Rookie Brock Purdy came in for Garoppolo and threw for 210 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 25-for-37 passing. Purdy, 22, was named “Mr. Irrelevant” after being the last player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft (Round 7, Pick 262).

Garoppolo is the second 49ers quarterback to suffer a season-ending injury this year. In September, second-year quarterback Trey Lance broke his right ankle in Week 2 at home against the Seattle Seahawks.

“It’s pretty crushing. We know what Jimmy’s been through, how hard he’s worked at this,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. “That was a really cool game, just as a team and all the stuff that went on throughout the game and just be able to overcome some things. So it’s such a special win. But definitely mixed emotions hearing about Jimmy.”

The 49ers (8-4) are currently the third seed in the NFC playoff picture and first place in the NFC West. San Francisco is one game up on the second-place Seahawks (7-5) in the division.

Even Year Curse?

With Garoppolo’s latest injury, this marks the third straight even year he has been injured and forced to miss extended time. He had lower-body injuries in 2018, 2020 and 2022.

  • 2018: Torn ACL (played only 3 games)
  • 2020: High-ankle sprain (played only 6 games)
  • 2022: Broken foot (will miss remaining 5 games)
