Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer mock Gianni Infantino in World Cup final

BBC World Cup host Gary Lineker and pundit Alan Shearer mocked FIFA chief Gianni Infantino after Argentina defeated France on penalties in the final in Qatar. The England icons felt that the president of the organisation’s attire was not suitable for the occasion, after Lionel Messi led his country to their third trophy.

After Messi and co had won the shoot-out and earned their places in Argentine history, Lineker and Shearer were commentating over the celebrations down on the pitch, which Infantino joined in on.

The BBC duo did not care for his shoes however. “Here come the dignitaries,” Lineker said. “Gianni Infantino there leading them out for the ceremony where they will give out the Golden Ball, the Golden Glove, the young player award so we have got a little time… interesting choice of trainers there from Gianni Infantino.” Shearer then joined to pile on the controversial FIFA chief: “How old is he?”

Infantino then went up to the stage to present the awards and trophy to Messi, who claimed his maiden World Cup after scoring two goals and the first penalty in the shoot-out after a 3-3 draw in extra time.

Substitutes Randal Kolo Muani and Kingsley Coman played their part in France getting back into the game, as Kylian Mbappe got a brace within two minutes.

He netted from the spot and then hit a volley past Emiliano Martinez to send the game to extra time, where Messi then stabbed home for Argentina’s third.

Mbappe then became the second player since Geoff Hurst to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final when he slotted another penalty past Lloris, but he was not to celebrate at the end of the shoot-out as two misses cost the French dealy as Argentina celebrated Messi’s first-ever World Cup win.
