Gary Neville hopes Bruno Fernandes ‘takes on board’ Jadon Sancho’s complaints after the Manchester United winger told his skipper to ‘stop moaning’ during Sunday’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa.
The Portuguese midfielder gave his side the lead after 39 minutes at Old Trafford, reacting quickest after Emiliano Martinez spilled Marcus Rashford’s shot and firing in the rebound.
United deserved their lead and created a number of chances in the first half prior to scoring, but Fernandes was left exasperated after one move fell apart.
His ire seemed to be directed at Sancho but the winger was having none of it, twice appearing to shout back at Fernandes to ‘stop moaning’.
Any lingering bad feelings between the pair did not last long, though, with Sancho one of the first players to congratulate his team-mate after the goal – though the pair seemed to have a little chat as they walked back to the centre circle.
United legend Neville has long complained about Fernandes’ behaviour and tendency to moan on the pitch and he feels Sunday’s incident summed him up, while he hopes Sancho’s reaction will prompt the skipper to adjust the way he acts.
Speaking about the widely circulated clip on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: ‘It sums Bruno Fernandes up.
‘He’s Manchester United’s most effective player, he’s Manchester United’s best player. But I think every Manchester United fan and probably every Manchester United player is thinking: just stop moaning!
‘I moan a lot, but I didn’t do it on the pitch at my own players! So that’s probably the perfect summary of Bruno Fernandes today.
‘He’s a match-winner, when Manchester United don’t have him in the team they drop levels like you wouldn’t believe – and we’ve seen that recently against Sevilla.
‘It’s an important win that for Manchester United today. Bruno Fernandes is a star. His assists and goals record is incredible from the position that he plays.
‘He always wants the ball, he’s got the courage to take the ball, he always fights for everything in a game.
‘But maybe one of his team-mates or two do need to tell him to stop moaning now and then, and that probably to be fair is something he will take on board.’
