Gas station shooting sees 2 teen girls shot dead, baby injured: police

Two teenagers were killed while another person and a baby boy suffered injuries during a shooting Friday night at a gas station in Memphis, Tennessee, according to local police.

The victims were parked in a red Infiniti at a gas pump at the Marathon gas station at about 9:35 p.m. when a dark-colored Nissan pulled up, the Memphis Police Department wrote in a series of tweets.

Someone in the Nissan began firing shots, striking the victims in their car, police said. The Nissan then fled the scene.

According to authorities, the shooting claimed the lives of a 15-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl. Meanwhile, another 16-year-old female and a 9-month-old baby boy were injured. Their condition was listed as non-critical, police said.

Officers recovered the suspect vehicle, but they made no arrests as of Saturday morning, according to the tweets. It was not clear what caused the shooting, which remains under investigation.

Newsweek reached out to the Memphis Police Department and Marathon for comment Saturday afternoon but did not hear back by publication. This story will be updated with any response.

In similar news, a different gas station in Memphis also became the site of a shooting Friday.

A clerk at a Valero gas station was shot multiple times during a robbery at about 5 a.m., according to WREG-TV. Police said the suspect went behind the counter demanded money from the store’s registers and pointed a gun at the clerk. When the clerk opened the register, the suspect allegedly shot them.

And another shooting near Memphis last week left one person dead. During a high school basketball game in Humboldt, Tennessee, on Tuesday, two adults got into an altercation that resulted in shots being fired. One person was killed and three others were injured during the shooting, but no students were involved.

“We know of one who was deceased, and another was flown to The Med in Memphis and was in surgery last I heard,” Humboldt Police Chief Reynard Buchanan told The Jackson Sun.

Buchanan added: “And as time passed, we were notified of others who showed up at nearby medical facilities who were apparently also injured, but none of those injuries were life-threatening.”

One person was taken into custody for investigative purposes. All classes at the school and activities were canceled Wednesday.

Humboldt is located about 90 miles northeast of Memphis.
