The Metroid franchise is having something of a moment right now. With the recent release of the highly praised Metroid Prime Remastered, I feel like the internet has been abuzz about the adventure of Samus Aran. I haven’t heard this much chatter about gaming’s favorite galactic bounty hunter since Metroid Dread dropped to widespread praise in 2021. Metroid has long been my favorite franchise from Nintendo (depending on the day of the week you as me) so the more I get to talk about it, the better.

For anyone who has missed out on the earlier games in the series, there is some good news. Metroid Fusion is coming to Nintendo Switch next week.

Originally released for the Game Boy Advance–on the same day Metroid Prime released for the GameCube—Metroid Fusion is the sequel to the critically lauded SNES masterpiece Super Metroid. The game finds Samus fighting for her life after being attacked by a parasite known as X. To save her life, doctors inject Samus with Metroid DNA, officially fusing her with the creature she once hunted to near extinction. But her recovery is cut short when she discovers a doppelganger known as SA-X is wreaking havoc on a Biologic Space Laboratories ship.

Play the other games too

Metroid Fusion will become available on Nintendo Switch on March 9 through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription plan. If you’re a complete newbie to the franchise, the first three games in the series—MetroidMetroid II: The Return of Samus, and Super Metroid—are also available on Nintendo Switch Online.

For those who’d rather own a copy of Metroid Fusion rather than rent one through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription, there is still time to buy the game on the Wii U Virtual Console before it gets taken offline later this month. You do still have your Wii U, don’t you?
