She conquered Perth and now Hannah Conda wants an even bigger title.

RuPaul is heading back our way for season two of Drag Race, which premieres on Stan on July 30, when some of Australia’s and New Zealand’s best drag queens sashay away in a bid to become Down Under’s Next Drag Superstar.

Conda is flying the flag for WA.

But before she left Perth for Sydney and cemented her status as the only queen to have ever won both Rising Star and Entertainer of the Year at the Drag Industry Variety Awards (DIVAs) in the same year, Conda was a “country kid” who grew up in York.

“My parents ran the Castle Hotel there when I was growing up. And I just remember, because it was the 90s, my dad would be counting cash, smoking a cigarette in the office, and I was sitting there doing my homework on the lap of the skimpy barmaid,” Conda told Perth Now.

“When I turned 18, I discovered drag.”

Twelve years on, Conda says the drag community has “come so far” but “there’s still so much work to do”.

“When I started we were still the bastard of the entertainment industry . . . But now it’s celebrated and I love that it’s become so mainstream,” she said.

“It’s a blessing and a curse. I think because it has been so underground and so taboo for a really long time. I think a lot of things now have definitely not aged well.”

Last year she was called out by Indigenous performer Felicia Fox for misappropriation.

Conda responded by acknowledging her actions in a nine-minute video on Instagram and vowed to continue educating herself and others, alongside continuing her work with Drag Storytime, an initiative she co-founded in 2016 where she and other queens read to young children in drag.

“Drag had to have a massive light shine on to really pull itself up by the bootstraps and realise, how even our community is plagued with things like misogyny, racism and transphobia,” she said.

“Drag was a sanctity for me and a safe place. And the last thing I ever want is my drag to ever affect anybody in a negative way because I want to be able to welcome everybody and make sure that they feel safe or seen.”
