Geoff Johns returns to FLASHPOINT BEYOND in new limited series

The Thomas Wayne Batman from the Flashpoint timeline has been traveling around the multiverse of late as a member of Justice League Incarnate. Now the character’s creator, Geoff Johns, is returning with a new story starring the alternate universe Dark Knight. DC has announced Flashpoint Beyond, a new, bi-weekly six-issue series kicking off in April. The series will tell the tale of what happened to Thomas Wayne and the world of Flashpoint following the conclusion of the 2011 series that ushered in DC’s New 52 initiative.

The series will kickoff with a special #0 issue written by Johns and illustrated by Eduardo Risso, who drew the three-issue Flashpoint: Batman – Knight of Vengeance miniseries back in 2011. The issue will feature a main cover by Dexter Soy, with variant covers by Risso (open-to-order), Max Dunbar (1:25), and Todd Nauck (1:50). Here’s how DC describes the issue:

After sacrificing everything to help The Flash put the universe back together and save Bruce Wayne’s life, Thomas Wayne wakes up in a world he thought was no more. Forced to don the cowl once again, Batman prowls the streets of Gotham City searching for answers to how this world still exists, but what he starts to uncover will send him hurtling around the globe. The hunt for the Clockwork Killer starts here!

Two weeks later, Johns will be joined for the official start of the six-issue series by co-writers Jeremy Adams & Tim Sheridan and artist Xermánico. Flashpoint Beyond #1 will feature a main cover by Mitch Gerads, plus variants by Xermánico (open-to-order), Gary Frank (1:25), and Nauck (1:50):

In FLASHPOINT BEYOND #1 Batman’s hunt for the Clockwork Killer brings him to Europe and face to face with the mad king, Aquaman. On the eve of Aquaman’s sinking of London, Batman infiltrates his stronghold and goes on the warpath for answers. Nothing matters to Batman, whose world is already dead, but if he can track down the Clockwork Killer, Thomas can save his son’s world and put everything back together again.

No colorists or letterers were named for either issue of the series.

The new series is the first significant DC work from Johns since the 2019 conclusion of Doomsday Clock, though the writer also wrote last year’s Stargirl Spring Break Special, and has contributed to various anthology titles in the interim as well. It’s unclear how closely, if at all, Flashpoint Beyond might tie to the events of Doomsday Clock, as it had been assumed by many that the reason the Flashpoint timeline survived as it appeared in 2017’s “The Button” storyline was due to the machinations of Doctor Manhattan.

It’s also Johns’s first major DC work since Justice League actor Ray Fisher came forward with allegations that Johns had threatened his career, had shielded director Joss Whedon‘s now-well-documented inappropriate behavior, and had offered racist criticisms of Fisher’s portrayal of Cyborg in the film.
