George, Charlotte and Louis live in a four-bedroom home in Windsor

Last summer, Kate Middleton, 41, and Prince William, 40, uprooted their family from London and moved to Adelaide Cottage on King Charles’s Windsor estate. Now Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, are living in a slightly more remote house than they were used to at Kensington Palace, but they have more bedroom space.

In 2013, Kate and William moved into the 20-room, four-story Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace, which had once been Princess Margaret’s home.

The 18-month project, which cost £4.5million, included new heating, electrics, plastering, the removal of asbestos, which almost completely dismantled the inside, and a new roof.

As of 2017, Kensington Palace replaced Anmer Hall in Norfolk as the Prince and Princess of Wales’s primary residence.

The four-story apartment has three bedrooms, two nurseries, and five living areas.

In 2016, the pair converted Apartment 8, the former home of Princess Diana, into an office for their workers, official business and charitable endeavours.

By the time Kate and William moved into Adelaide Cottage in 2022, many royal commentators were calling the move a “downsize”.

For instance, royal experts Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie, who run the podcast Royally Obsessed, said at the time: “They’re supposedly moving into Adelaide cottage which is such a downsize.

“It’s really low-key – just four bedrooms supposedly. It’s supposed to be almost like a little schoolhouse, so it’s really unprecedented that they’re making this choice.”

Last November, Kate released a video for Addiction Awareness Week from inside Adelaide Cottage.

The video was recorded in the Princess of Wales’s living room, which included a cream sofa adorned with pink, white, and red cushions as well as framed pictures in the distance.

According to Deepa Mehta-Sagar, an interior designer, decorator and founder of Area Decor LLC, the family’s living room decor is “traditional”.

She explained: “The sofa is traditional with clean lines which lends it a regal look.

“The whole space comes alive with a splash of red, and floral tossed cushions, which add warmth.

“It’s formal yet inviting and makes for the perfect spot from which the couple can air interviews.”

Adelaide Cottage was originally built in the 17th century and was a simple keepers’ cottage.

Deepa added: “The four-bedroom residence reportedly holds on to traditional furnishings such as a nautical-inspired theme in the main bedroom, recycled from a 19th-century royal yacht, and in this, the décor is almost iconic.”
