Be warned! The following contains spoilers for the ending of The Flash.
Who knew one little can of tomatoes would lead to Clooney fan art? The Flash finds the Scarlet Speedster (Ezra Miller) trying to rewrite history, so he can save his mother (Maribel Verdú) from the clutches of death. And during the film’s time-traveling antics, which revolve around a can of tomatoes, fans are treated to an assortment of multiverse versions of their favorite characters. And that includes a brief cameo by George Clooney as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. For one enthusiast, who checked out the new DC movie when it dropped on digital, seeing Clooney reprise the role of Gotham City’s billionaire playboy was an inspiration. And it led to some intriguing artwork. Check out the fan poster courtesy of Instagram user clements.ink below:
At the conclusion of The Flash, Barry Allen (Miller) celebrates after his father (Ron Livingston) is at last exonerated for wrongfully being charged with the murder of his wife, Nora Allen (Verdú). Barry then receives a phone call from Bruce Wayne, who he expects to be the Ben Affleck version of the Bat. However, Barry is stunned when Clooney, not Affleck, approaches the youngster to congratulate him on the court ruling.

The Flash (Ezra Miller) didn’t learn his lesson about messing with time. And once he moves that simple container of tomatoes from the bottom shelf to the top shelf, to help set his father (Livingston) free, it opens up a whole new can of spaghetti-shaped multiverse madness. Yes, moving the pasta ingredient makes Barry Allen’s father look up in the grocery store, which allows a security camera to corroborate his innocence. However, Barry’s tampering with the events of the past also wipes out Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne who is replaced by George Clooney.
Clooney infamously portrayed the part of Batman/Bruce Wayne 26 years ago in director Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997). The follow-up to Batman Forever (1995) was an absolute train wreck with both critics and fans alike: resulting in a paltry Tomatometer rating of only 11% and an audience score of 16%. At the box office, Batman & Robin nearly killed the franchise with a worldwide take of only $238.2 million (per Box Office Mojo). But in 2005 director Christopher Nolan started righting the ship with his Dark Knight Trilogy and the now lauded comic book movie classic Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises.
Seeing George Clooney and Barry Allen meet was an interesting way to end director Andy Muschietti’s theatrical entry in what was the DCEU, especially considering The Flash alternate endings that could have been. One conclusion featured Michael Keaton (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and Sasha Calle (Kara Zor-El/Supergirl), and the other would have brought in Henry Cavill (Clark Kent/Superman) and Gal Gadot (Diana Prince/Wonder Woman). Was the return of George Clooney’s Caped Crusader the right choice?
