Lou DiBella reacts to George Kambosos beating Teofimo Lopez

George Kambosos Jr doesn’t think Teofimo Lopez will want to fight him again after his upset win against the American last weekend.

The betting favourite Lopez lost his unified WBA, WBO, IBF and The Ring lightweight titles by split decision to Kambosos in New York.

One judge scored the fight 114–113 for Lopez, whilst the other two had it 115–112 and 115–111 in favour of Kambosos.

Lopez was furious with the decision and insisted he won the fight, but it was Kambosos who would return to Australia with the world titles.

Kambosos’ promoter Lou DiBella said the newly crowned champion will take some time off to mourn his grandfather George, who passed away two months ago.

But Kambosos thinks when he does make his ring return it won’t be against Lopez.

“Yeah, I think hearing [what he said] this morning he wants nothing to do with a rematch,” he told Boxing Scene after the fight.

“I think he wants to spend some time with his [newborn] kid and, you know, take some time off, which is totally fine.”

“Even last night in the ring, you know, when I said it a few times, there was no, ‘Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Let’s do it! Let’s do it!,” Kambosos said.

“Look, it doesn’t bother me no more. I’ve gotta sit down with my team and see what makes sense. But, you know, I know he’s got a lotta things he’s gotta get sorted now.”

Arguably the biggest fight to make next for Kambosos is the winner of Devin Haney vs Joseph Diaz Jr, which takes place this weekend in Las Vegas.

Haney – who has held the WBC title since 2019 – will aim to make the fourth defence of his title against Diaz in the hope of setting up an undisputed fight with Kambosos.

Kambosos could also entertain fights with the likes of Vasily Lomachenko, Gervonta Davis and Olympic standout Shakur Stevenson.

The 28-year-old feels he is the “shot-caller” after winning the 135lb world titles and will choose who he wants to fight next.

“He’s [Lopez] gotta, you know, recover. There was a lotta damage he took last night,” he continued.

“I’ve gotta heal a little bit as well, even though I wanna be back in the gym today.

“So, we’ll see. We’ll see. There’s a lotta good names. But the best thing about it is I’ve got all the belts now, so I’m the shot-caller, I can pick and choose who I want.

‘But again, I want the best. I want the best fights. I don’t duck or dodge anybody.”
