Georgie Stone’s documentary set for Perth premiere

Growing up, Georgie Stone didn’t have a lot of people who she could identify with but now she is a role model to many.

The actor made history when she became the first-ever transgender person to be cast on Neighbours and now she’s ready to share her almost two-decade journey with her fans and others.

The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone is a documentary that Stone described to AAA as a “coming-of-age” story showing her going from a place of powerlessness to a strong woman taking back the power over her life, story and body.

“I really just wanted to get my story out there and be able to tell my story in a respectful way and hopefully people will get something out of it,” she said.

“When the story started to take shape, the main thing was having control over it because I had my mum and I had done a lot of advocacy and the media told our story, but we never really had the power over how our story was told,” she explained.

“And then as we were in the editing process, it became this kind of nonlinear structure. We brought in the idea of dreams and memories and the dream life, which is the title and that became a central theme as well.”

Stone said she hoped the documentary would educate the wider community but also represent people just like her.

“The landscape is quite sparse in terms of trans rep growing up and a lot of the stereotypes that were very prevalent were trans women grew up to be sex workers or in prison, and I couldn’t see a future for myself that was outside of that and that was very scary as a young person,” she said.

“So that links back to what we’re doing with the film — that concept of the dream life, having a future that you can be excited about and that they will have the power to create for themselves.”

The Dreamlife of Georgie Stone will screen at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival for two nights only this weekend.
