Music fans are in for a major treat when A Flock of Seagulls and ABC perform a tantalizing ’80s new wave doubleheader on July 15 as part of the Music in the Park concert series at Plaza de Cesar Chavez in downtown San Jose.
The Seagulls are listed first on all the promotional material we’ve seen for the show, which likely means the Liverpool troupe — led by vocalist Mike Score — will likely go on last.
No doubt, it should be great to see Score, who many will remember for having what was arguably the most iconic hairdo of the entire new wave movement, and hear the Grammy-winning band perform such singles as “Space Age Love Song,” “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” and, of course, “I Ran (So Far Away).”
Yet, we’re even more excited about seeing ABC, who were one of the most wonderfully stylish and polished pop-rock acts to come to fame in the ’80s.
The band’s 1982 offering — “The Lexicon of Love” — was one of the decade’s best debuts, shining ever so brightly thanks to such gems as “Tears Are Not Enough,” “Poison Arrow” and “Look of Love.” In particular, “All of My Heart” is as a fine a love ballad as any ever produced in the new wave genre.
Plus, vocalist Martin Fry and company can still turn on the charm and magic on the live stage — as fans found out when ABC played Bimbo’s 365 Club in San Francisco in 2021. (Read our interview with Fry here.)
Also, make sure to arrive to the show in time to hear legendary Bay Area DJ Big Rick Stuart — known for his work at the old KFOG and Live 105 stations — and Dvs Dave spin before ABC and A Flock of Seagulls take the stage.
Show runs 5-10 p.m. Tickets are $35-$75, mitpsj.com.
