The state line between millennial and Gen Z is narrow, just wide enough to hold a handful of cultural touch points. One of those touch points is Pretty Little Liars, the mystery thriller that aired on ABC Family from 2010 to 2017. Originally based on a series of books by writer Sara Shepard, Pretty Little Liars went on to become an entire franchise, sprouting four related television series–Pretty Dirty Secrets, Ravenswood, The Perfectionists, and now, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. The first three episodes of the new series landed on HBO Max today, with the remainder of the season dropping over the next few weeks.
The series will follow a similar storyline as its predecessors, a group of teen girls gets low-key stalked, harassed, and assaulted by a person disguised by the moniker, “A.” These little liars look different from the original group, leaving the less savory aspects of the story in the past–yes, we’re talking about teen Aria’s romantic and sexual relationship with her adult teacher, teen Spencer’s romantic and sexual relationship with her sister’s adult
fiancé, teen Alison’s romantic and sexual relationship with the high school’s adult hockey coach. You get it.
That said, these final girls surely have secrets of their own. Before we start spinning fan theories, let’s get acquainted with our new pretty little liars and the young actresses who play them.
