MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Girls’ team booked a spot in the Fiba U16 Women’s Asian Championship Division B semifinals after completing a sweep in the group stage with a 106-58 drubbing of host Jordan on Wednesday.
Kimi Sayson delivered an all-around game as she led the way with 19 points and had a tremendous defensive effort with seven steals on top of six assists, and four rebounds as the Philippines swept all its three matches in Pool A.
Ava Fajardo also shone with 17 points and five assists, as Nevaeh Smith chipped in 15 points. Ryan Kelly Nair dropped 11 points, seven assists, and four steals.
Scarlett Mercado and Demicah Arnaldo added 10 markers in another lopsided victory for Gilas girls, who averaged 69.7 points win margin including their beating of Hong Kong and Maldives.
The Philippines will battle either Malaysia or Singapore on Saturday in the semifinals as it eyes to get promoted to Division A.
Gilas girls had 28 steals, scoring 45 off Jordan’s turnovers. The Filipinos only committed nine turnovers and tallied 27 assists in the match.
Jordan fell to the brink of missing the semis as it dropped to 1-2 in the group amid Zena Sameh Suleiman Alkarain’s effort of 26 points and seven rebounds.
