Acclaimed actress Gillian Anderson has come a long way, from hunting down extraterrestrials to portraying British head of state, and now to the Wild West. Per a report from Variety, the next project on her docket will be her third one from Netflix, a Western drama titled The Abandons that will see her take on yet another compelling matriarch role. She’ll be joining Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, who was also recently cast for the series.
The Abandons is set as a compelling Western drama series that takes place in Oregon in the mid-1800s, at the peak of the Manifest Destiny era of belief among American expansionists. The show will follow a “group of diverse, outlier families” who are living on the “fringe of society”, not partaking in the status quo. To protect their lands, they must band together to hold off corrupt figures who take what they please with excessive wealth and power, and seek to force out those who remain in their way. These families will ultimately have to bend the law and pursue their Manifest Destiny to keep what’s rightfully theirs. The show is helmed by Kurt Sutter, who previously created the popular crime drama series Sons of Anarchy. Co-directors include Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) and Stephen Surjik (The Witcher). They’re also executive producing alongside Sutter, Emmy Grinwis, and Denise Harkavy.
What to Expect From Both Headey and Anderson
So far, only Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey have been cast in the series. Anderson has been making a name for herself with Netflix lately, starring in the British comedy drama series Sex Education (2019) as well as taking on the role of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in season four of the riveting historical drama The Crown (2020). Meanwhile, it’ll be Headey’s first small-screen role since her heralded tenure as the diabolical Cersei Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones. She’ll be playing the role of character named Fiona, while Anderson is set for the role of Constance, who is described as a confident matriarch who values power, wealth, and lineage above everything else. As the head of her family, she inherited her husband’s fortune and then doubled it, something that would otherwise be impossible in a period of “inherent bias against women”. This may mean that she’ll be one of those powerful corrupts who seek to claim and settle the rest of the American frontier. Nothing is yet known about Fiona’s character.
There is currently no premiere date set for The Abandons, but it will stream exclusively on Netflix. The official synopsis for the series can be read below.
The Abandons is set in 1850s Oregon and follows a group of diverse outlier families in their pursuit of Manifest Destiny. The series explores the corrupt force of wealth and power that covets their land and attempts to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.”
