Some of the top names in global contemporary art are part of a new virtual-reality art trail in Melbourne.
International artists KAWS, Olafur Eliasson, Cao Fei, Koo Jeong A, Nina Chanel Abney and David Shrigley have produced augmented-reality artworks “installed” at Federation square – which people can view by downloading an app on their smartphone.
The works range from small sculptures to building-sized moving images.
New commissions by celebrated Australian artists Reko Rennie, Ron Mueck and Patricia Piccinini are also part of the free exhibition.
“Melbourne’s spectacular arts precinct is the envy of cities across the globe, and this vibrant new digital creative experience will give locals and visitors alike yet another reason to come in and soak up the colour, energy and vibrancy of our city,” Lord Mayor Sally Capp said in a statement.
The show was developed with London-based digital art organisation Acute Art, which has developed similar shows in Singapore, New York, London and Tokyo.
It forms the biggest augmented reality art trail the city has yet seen, in an attempt to encourage visitors to stay in the CBD for longer, and was paid for through the state government and city council’s $10 million Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund.
