PENNSYLVANIA, 30th September, 2022 (WAM) — Several specialists and experts in the industrial sector stated that the Global Manufacturing and Industrialisation Summit (GMIS) is a key platform for gathering innovators, industrialists and representatives of international companies to discuss ways of shaping the future of the industrial sector, as well as connecting manufacturers and governments to help realise the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
In their statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during GMIS-USA 2022 currently held in Pittsburgh, the officials and experts noted that the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) is working closely with its partners in the UAE, Lloyd’s Register and the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) of the University of Cambridge to launch the Global Initiative for Future Industrial Safety.
Ibtisam Ali Al Saadi, Director of the Industrial Development Administration at the Department of Economic Development-Abu Dhabi, said that GMIS-USA is an opportunity to gather the major players of the UAE’s manufacturing sector and help strengthen Abu Dhabi’s industrial sector.
He then talked about Abu Dhabi’s industrial strategy and the new investment opportunities it offers, in which it will invest AED10 billion to double the size of its manufacturing sector to AED172 billion by 2031, increase its trade with global markets, and create a smart circular economy.
Farrukh Alimdjanov, Industrial Development Expert at UNIDO, said that UNIDO’s key mission is to help establish a sustainable and comprehensive global industrial sector and enable companies in the industrial sector, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to increase their competitiveness, ensure the economic prosperity of their communities, encourage exports and diversify sources of income.
Dr. Carlos López-Gómez, head of Policy Links of IfM Engage at the University of Cambridge, said that IfM has been an active participant in GMIS over the past five years. He noted that the summit is a key platform for the industrial community to gather and discuss the challenges they are facing caused by modern technologies and geopolitical events.
He said that the global initiative for future industrial safety is the outcome of the cooperation between UNIDO, Lloyd’s Register and GMIS. It aims to address industrial safety challenges, and highlights the importance of having awareness to solve these challenges. UNIDO’s statistics show that nearly three million people are killed in work-related accidents around the world.
“We are currently working closely with our partners to launch a global declaration for industrial safety, which is the first step to implementing the Global Initiative for Future Industrial Safety. It contains key guidelines that must be adopted by the international industrial community to create safe workplaces for the global labour force,” López-Gómez said, adding that the declaration is an international document that will encourage companies and establishments to adopt these guidelines and implement relevant recommendations.
