For many new mums, the idea of returning to work after parental leave is a big ol’ mixed bag of emotions. There may be some excitement and relief to re-join the workforce, but the prospect is often loaded with guilt and apprehension about leaving your baby, especially if your employer won’t offer the flexibility or support you need.
The dream scenario is striking a balance between work and family-life that is right for you. But for that to happen, your employer needs to be on board with supporting parents to thrive in their careers.
Therapy Focus is one employer who gets it.
Senior Manager People, Talent and Culture at Therapy Focus Kelly Byleveld said employees expect and deserve more than the nine-to-five grind of years gone by.
“If you want to attract and retain the best staff, employers must learn to be flexible and adapt to the modern working environment,” Ms Byleveld said.
Advanced Speech Pathologist and Team Leader at Therapy Focus Stephanie Robinson said she felt anxious about returning to work with two young children at home.
“I had previously returned to the workforce with another organisation, however, I found this difficult to manage due to having longer work hours and limited options of the days I could work,” Ms Robinson said.
When a colleague from Therapy Focus approached her about an opportunity and mentioned flexible working hours and days, Ms Robinson took her up.
“When I started, I immediately felt great about my choice to work for Therapy Focus,” Ms Robinson said.
“My colleagues were welcoming, the work hours suited my young family and a short drive to work meant I saved two hours a day in travel. Therapy Focus also offered me fantastic professional development opportunities which meant that I was up to date with my learning and skills, so I no longer felt anxious about any potential gaps in my knowledge after taking time off to have a family.”
Ms Byleveld said Therapy Focus is very supportive of new parents returning to the workforce offering the ability to work part-time and with 20 locations throughout the metro area, employees can work from an office that is close to home.
“By offering flexible working arrangements, new parents can transition back into the workforce without missing those important appointments or family milestones, as well as maintain a sustainable work-life balance,” she said.
Therapy Focus is a not-for-profit organisation and a respected leader in the WA disability sector. They promote a positive work culture that emphasises supporting one another. Visit the website to find out more.
