Golovkin rubbishes retirement claims and teases plans after Canelo III

Gennady Golovkin has confirmed that he will continue fighting regardless of the result of his third fight with Canelo Alvarez on Saturday. Rumours have been circulating since 2019 that GGG is set to retire, but the Kazakh puncher has other ideas.

Speaking to a group of assembled media at Thursday’s final press conference, Golovkin affirmed that he has “many more options” after the conclusion of the trilogy and is open to a fourth fight with the former pound-for-pound king if fans want to see it.

“You stay in boxing when you’re still in demand and when there are offers for fights, of course,” he said “I have certain plans, without any doubt, regardless of the outcome of this fight, and whether it’s going to be a draw. [If] the fourth fight is going to be offered, I would say, ‘Why not?’ – if people want it. And you should not forget that I have three belts at 160 still.”

Golovkin’s staying power will depend on the success of this weekend’s pay-per-view sales. Their inaugural encounter in 2017 did 1.3 million buys while the second, a year later, did 1.1 million (both on HBO).

“I wouldn’t say so,” he told Combat Compas when asked if Golovkin-Canelo III will be his career finale. “I still have a lot of plans. There is my home country of Kazakhstan, where I believe I need a fight. On one side, I can say that I retired some time ago when the pandemic began, the very active part of the career. But on the other hand, I still have some plans in the world of boxing.”

Canelo and Golovkin square off on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the Mexican’s WBA (super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and Ring Magazine super-middleweight titles. The fight marks Golovkin’s first outing at 168lb after spending his entire professional career at 160lb.
