Gennady Golovkin has taken aim at Canelo Alvarez’s punching power by suggesting that the famous crunching right from their inaugural encounter felt like a ‘slap’. The pair first fought each other in September 2017 for the WBA (super), WBC, IBF, and Ring Magazine middleweight titles.
Many believe Golovkin should have been declared the winner that night, but the contest ended in a split draw. Despite a strong showing, GGG was caught by a huge looping backhand in the ninth round that echoed around Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena.
The Kazahk’s head was snapped back over his shoulder, but the punch seemingly did very little damage to Golovkin who continued undeterred. When asked about the shot during a segment with DAZN, he replied: “I remember that punch. Well, I let it get through. You know, it wasn’t – I don’t know what to call it – it wasn’t hard. It felt kind of like a slap I guess. A slap or a sliding punch. Well, it didn’t do too much.”
Golovkin has long been hailed for his granite chin. The former unified middleweight champion has never touched the canvas during his combined 394 fights in amateur and professional boxing.
“He’s not honest, he’s a f***ing a**hole,” Canelo said during the launch press conference earlier this year. “He pretends to be a good person but he talks a lot of s*** about me. He’ll say, ‘I respect him, his career,’ and in other parts he’ll say, ‘He’s an embarrassing boxer, he’s embarrassing for Mexican boxing.’ I hate that motherf**** because of that.”
These comments come after Golovkin branded Canelo a ‘cheat’ following the news that the Mexican had tested positive for clenbuterol ahead of their original May 2018 date. This is believed to be the reason for the change in the atmosphere ahead of fight number three.
