Google Passkeys: Google has announced that it will be rolling out Passkeys – a feature to allow personal account holders log in with an alternative to their Google account password.
The search engine giant said in a blog post that for the first time ever it has begun rolling out ‘passkeys’ — a feature it terms as the easiest and most secure way to sign in to apps and websites. It stated that the step is a major leap towards what it envisions as a “passwordless future.”

“For the first time, we’ve begun rolling out passkeys, the easiest and most secure way to sign in to apps and websites and a major step toward a “passwordless future,” Google said in its blog.

What are Google Passkeys?

The company believes passwords are a passe’, and Passkeys are the new way to sign in to apps and websites. It said that unlike passwords, the passkeys are not succeptible to online attacks like phishing, which makes them more secure than OTPs and one-time codes over SMS.

How to enable, setup Passkeys for Google Accounts?

The search engine behemoth said that it has already begun rolling passkeys for Google Accounts.

Users can try them out at g.co/passkeys and it doesn’t take long to set up.

But in case the feature isn’t yet available for any particular set of users, they need not worry because passwords and 2-step-verification (2SV) authentications will still continue to function as usual on Google Accounts.

Google Workspace accounts holders and administrators will soon get the option to enable passkeys for their end-users during sign in, it added.

As per reports, users will have to follow these two steps to create a Google passkey —
1) Upon being prompted, confirm the passkey account information
2) Record fingerprint, face or screen lock when Google prompts on sign in.

This will enable log in without password.

Google Account holders will then be able to log in to their accounts using the front-facing camera, fingerprint or screenlock — just like several banking apps use currently.
