Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA), the supercar company headed by the man behind the McLaren F1, has just announced another new car – and this time there’s no roof.
Called the T.33 Spider and to be fully revealed on 4 April, the new car is a convertible version of the T.33 that GMA revealed in January 2022. Both cars sit below the T.50, GMA’s flagship supercar which was signed off by Murray this week and is about to go into production.
The new T.33 Spider is powered by the same Cosworth-built, naturally-aspirated, 3.9-liter V12 engine as the T.33 coupe. It produces 615 horsepower and revs to a dizzying 11,100 rpm. With an initial sketch showing the T.33 Spider’s engine air intake right above the open cabin, I can only imagine how incredible this car will sound from the driving seat.
In typical Murray style the sketch focuses on how air will be guided over, under, through and around the car to increase downforce and minimize drag.
Few other details have been given for now, other than the car’s weight. At 1,108kg (2,443 lbs) the T.33 Spider is only 18kg heavier than the coupe – an impressive feat given the extra strengthening usually required when the roof is removed.
The rest of the car is expected to be very similar to the coupe, with a two-seat cabin (not the three-seat layout of the T.50 flagship), an all-carbon chassis and body, and a six-speed manual transmission.
Murray said of the T.33 Spider: “From the outset of the T.33 program, I always intended there to be a Spider – in fact, I sketched the Spider before the coupe to ensure the proportions worked. And from that first sketch I knew, with its open cockpit and the incredible Cosworth GMA.2 V12 engine right behind you, the T.33 Spider would deliver a truly involving driving experience that’s quite unlike anything else.”
The car will be revealed in full during an online event that kicks off at 17:00 BST (12:00 EST) on 4 April.
