
The Gorewada International Zoo in Nagpur, Maharashtra will soon be renamed as Balasaheb Thackeray Zoological Park by the state government. The zoo which was around 1900 hectares of land will be renovated and brought to around 2000 hectares of forest land. The zoological park will be inaugurated on January 26, 2022, by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray.
This news was announced by the State Forest Minister, Sanjay Rathod. While making this news public, he also mentioned that a government resolution (GR) with regards to this zoo has been issued. The zoo will be upgraded and will have an Indian safari too. Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray will also inaugurate the safari on January 26, 2022.
As soon as the Indian safari will be inaugurated, three vehicles having a special capacity of 40 seats and an online ticket booking facility will be made available. The upgraded International zoo will have several other kinds of safari and will also have a rescue center within the premises. This park will also offer various opportunities for researchers; it will provide education and training for many wildlife researchers.
With an aim to protect the forest and promote tourism, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Prakash Javadekar had made an announcement to set up an ‘International standard bio park’ in August 2019. This task was then entrusted to the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra.
