Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) apologized Monday morning after his campaign Twitter account got personal with a 17-year-old over the weekend, posting a picture of the teen before deleting it.
Key Facts
On Saturday, Ethan Lynne, a high school senior who has held several internships with Virginia Democrats, according to his Twitter and LinkedIn profiles, reshared a post correcting a Richmond public radio station VPM report that indicated Youngkin may axe prior efforts from Democratic governors to acknowledge the history of slaves at the governor’s mansion.
Shortly after, the official “Team Youngkin” Twitter account posted a picture of Lynne and former Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D), referring to calls for his resignation in 2019 after a 1984 yearbook photo depicting one person in blackface and the other in a Ku Klux Klan costume resurfaced.
Youngkin first addressed the incident in a Monday morning apology tweet, saying the tweet was “unauthorized,” writing, “I regret that this happened and it shouldn’t have,” and saying he “addressed it with my team.”
Key Background
Youngkin won Virginia’s governor race in November, narrowly edging out Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Youngkin, the former co-CEO of private equity firm the Carlyle Group is worth $450 million, according to Forbes’ estimates. During his first day in office, Youngkin signed 11 executive orders addressing hot-button conservative issues, such as banning school mask mandates and “Critical Race Theory” from public school curriculums. A Virginia judge temporarily blocked Youngkin’s order to offer parents the ability to opt out of school districts’ mask mandates last week, shortly after Youngkin was heckled for not wearing a mask at a Virginia grocery store.
Tangent
Stacey Abrams, a Democratic candidate for Georgia’s governorship, also found herself in hot water for her social media posts over the weekend after she retweeted (and later deleted) several images depicting her maskless in a Georgia elementary school, defying local mask mandates. Abrams dismissed the outrage stoked mostly by Republicans as a “false political attack” without explaining why she was not wearing a mask.
