Graham Potter believes his training sessions are being ‘undermined’ by the club’s reckless spending because he has too many players to work with.

The under-fire Chelsea boss is clinging onto his job at Stamford Bridge following Sunday’s dismal 2-0 defeat to rivals Tottenham.

That leaves the Blues with just two wins in their last 15 matches and they’ve scored with just one of their last 60 shots in the Premier League.

Chelsea languish in 10th and their hopes of finishing in the top four are slim, meaning their best opportunity of qualifying for the Champions League is to win this season’s competition.

While results have not been good enough, there’s sympathy for Potter in that he’s taken charge of the club in a period of instability given Todd Boehly’s takeover.

Chelsea have spent £600m since Boehly bought the club from Roman Abramovich, and eight of the club’s last 17 signings arrived in January under Potter.

That bloated Chelsea’s squad to a whopping 31 first team members, which is roughly seven or eight higher than Potter would ideally want.

The hands-on former Brighton boss tends to work 11vs11 with his players on the training ground, so that they can prepare his players for match conditions.

However, replicating this in Chelsea training has been nigh-on impossible, with Potter having to leave up to 10 players doing separate drills elsewhere.

This has naturally made some players feel isolated, while having too many players to keep happy has been an unwanted distraction for Potter.

Potter approved much of the club’s spending in January, as he feels the squad needed strengthening.

However, he believed that many players would be sold or moved on, which did not happen.
