Singer-songwriter Lizzo won record of the year for “About Damn Time,” her first time winning one of the four big Grammys, and immediately delivered one of the best acceptance speeches of the night.

“Let me tell you something, me and Adele are having a good time just enjoying ourselves, just rooting for our friends, so this is an amazing night,” Lizzo said as her tablemate and fellow nominee Adele.

“I want to dedicate this award to Prince,” she said. “When we lost Prince, I decided to dedicate my life to making positive music. And I was like I don’t care if my positivity bothers you, what’s wrong with you?

“Because I wanted to make the world a better place. And now look around, there’s all these songs about loving our bodies and feeling comfortable in our skin and feeling good.

“I’d like to believe that people cannot only do good, but we are good,” Lizzo said. “We are good inherently.”

She then gave a shout-out to fellow nominee Beyoncé, and brought the house down.

“Beyoncé, woo, in the fifth grade I skipped school to see you perform,” she said as Beyonce stood and applauded. “My sister, she got me out of school. It was Literature, I’m good. You changed my life. You sang that gospel medley and you made me feel.”

With that, she jumped and down and pretty much danced off-stage.

Moments earlier, Bonnie Raitt won song of the year for “Just Like That,” and from the look on her face as her name was called by presenter and first lady Dr. Jill Biden, she totally did not expect it.

“I’m so surprised, I don’t know what to say,” Raitt said as she reached the stage. “This is just an unreal moment.

“I was so inspired for this song, by the incredible story of the love and the grace and the generosity of someone that donates their beloved’s organs to help another person live,” she said. “The story was so simple and so beautiful for these times.”

She said she’d also been inspired by the late John Prine’s way of storytelling in his songwriting.

“I don’t write a lot of songs but I‘m so proud that you appreciate this one,” she finished. “I’m just totally humbled.”
