Duke University men’s basketball players Paolo Banchero, a likely top pick in next year’s NBA draft, and Michael Savarino, grandson of the team’s head coach Mike Krzyzewski, face charges from a DWI incident near campus in Orange County, North Carolina, early Sunday morning, according to court records obtained by the News & Observer.

Savarino, a 20-year-old junior, was arrested for driving while intoxicated in a car registered to Banchero, indicating signs of impairment during a traffic stop while a breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol content of .08, according to the N&O.
Banchero, a 19-year-old freshman, was not arrested, but was cited for aiding and abetting DWI as a backseat passenger in the vehicle, a unique North Carolina charge that can occur when an individual knowingly gives the keys of their vehicle to an impaired driver.
Court records indicate that Savarino was released from Orange County jail under the supervision of Grayson Sherr, a student manager for the Duke basketball team.
Banchero has a December 8 court date, while Savarino will go to court December 9.

Krzyzewski, who is set to retire this season after four decades at Duke, said in a written statement provided to Forbes: “We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team. Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”
What To Watch For
Duke has not announced any disciplinary action, and it is unknown if Banchero or Savarino will play in the team’s home game against Gardner-Webb Tuesday night.
