Granit Xhaka has left Arsenal to join Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal.

The Switzerland international ends his seven-year stay in north London, returning to the Bundesliga in a deal reportedly worth £21million.

His departure comes ahead of the imminent arrival of Declan Rice, who is set to join the Gunners from West Ham United for a Premier League record fee.

The 30-year-old endured some turbulent moments during his time in the capital, booed off by supporters in 2019 before angrily shouting back at them in an incident that led to him being stripped of the captaincy by Unai Emery.

Under Mikel Arteta however his fortunes improved, playing a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title charge last season.

He leaves the club after 297 appearances, 23 goals and 29 assists having won two FA Cups.

In a goodbye message to supporters, Xhaka said: ‘We are sitting here nearly seven years later and I feel the same as when it was 2016.

‘The love you can feel from the people makes you proud. I try to give something back and to have played for this club makes me feel very proud. For the fans, like always, thanks for the support, even in the bad times. Thank you.’

‘We are saying goodbye to a fantastic player and person loved by all of us,’ Arteta said.

‘It has been an incredible journey together for him and he has given absolutely everything for this club. The influence Granit has had on his team mates on the pitch and colleagues at the club, will tell you just how popular he is.

‘We cannot thank Granit enough for his service and contribution to this club over the years. We wish Granit and his family all the best in the next step of their lives.’

Arsenal sporting director Edu said: ‘Granit has been a big part of our club for a long time. He has given us great commitment and quality over the years, playing such an important role in our progression and success.

‘He leaves us with our huge respect and thanks. We wish Granit all the best for the future.’
