Graphic updos dominated the Oscars

0

We’re not sure if some kind of memo went round the A-listers before attending the Oscars 2023 ceremony, but the consensus is: graphic updos are in. And not just ultra sleek chignons (although we saw plenty of those), but to really rock the trend, the more experimental and extra the aesthetic, the better.

Leading the charge is Wakanda’s warrior general, Danai Gurira, who swapped her character Okoye’s buzzcut for an impossibly gravity defying four-tiered bun, complete with glitz hair bracelet, because… it’s the Academy Awards after all. Both Little Mermaid actress, Halle Bailey and model, Ashley Graham, served up intricately braided buns. Sandra Oh gave her own rendition of a Tinkerbell bun and RiRi’s spiky knotted topknot kept things interesting.

Here’s all the graphic updos that stole the spotlight at the 2023 Oscars…

Rihanna’s spiky knotted topknot

RiRi gave us another glimpse of her bump in a sheer and leather cut-out panelled black gown, and to co-ordinate with the graphic shape, she finished off her look with the cutest spiky top knot. The twisted bun owed its shape to some loose ends which were fanned out from the top and bottom to add extra interest.

Danai Gurira’s XXL tiered bun

We had to pick our jaws back up when we saw Danai’s XXXXXXXL bun. On close inspection, it looks to be four tiers and utterly gravity defying, but we love that Danai opted for a look that made a statement. She encircled the bun with a silver diamonte bangle and contrasted her futuristic updo with a classic smoky eye and red lip makeup look.

Florence Pugh’s reverse ponytail

Florence gave us an Audrey Hepburn moment with a cropped micro fringe and dead-straight brows, but to make it her own she paired it with a split ponytail, half was flicked at the nape of her neck and the other was flipped forward to create a reversed shape.
