Grasso’s Garage: E-Pace Jaguar is a 2022 subcompact win

Jaguar-Land Rover, known as JLR in the industry world, is known for its upscale luxury vehicles at reasonable or should I say realistic prices. Now JLR does it again, but this time on a smaller scale.

In Grasso’s Garage this week, we enjoyed Jaguar’s E-Pace. E for economy or entry-level of course, the subcompact SUV is really a joy to drive and a win for consumers. In Grasso’s Garage, we like to call it the “Junior Jag” as its big brother and recently tested, F-Pace was tons of fun and more spacious. The E-pace has some recent interior upgrades and exterior appearance wins which we really enjoyed on our test.

In the powertrain, we recognize the ever-popular 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 296 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Similar to other recently tested Jaguars, this motor is peppy and quick on its feet while not having a significant turbo lag. A nine-speed automatic transmission comes with paddle shifters. With all-wheel drive standard on the E-Pace, our Caldera Red 300 Sport tester was a lot of fun and easy on the eyes.

Interiorwise, it’s typical Jaguar with its comfortable seats, a center-stacked 11.4-inch infotainment system, which is not the easiest to use but once you get the hang of it, it is useful. Heated and cooled seats, heads up display and LED lights are all standard. We noticed some nice additions to our tester which came in with a total of $9,000 in upgrades such as the cold climate package, the Convenience package and red brake calipers. A Meridian Surround Sound system was also an upgradable option. A 5-year / 60,000-mile warranty also comes standard including 24-hour roadside assistance.

Overall, the E-Pace was small and subcompact, just how the budget friendly consumers like it. For its luxury appeal and accouterments, we realize that Jaguar is not what it used to be when Ford owned it, but with Land Rover at the helm, they really put the extra touches on top making it a nice luxury option. On a scale with Volvo and Lincoln, we welcome Jaguar and its E-Pace to the competition table.
