In the automotive industry, the word iconic is rarely used. An icon would stand out clearly for its history and longevity in the lineup but style and consumer awareness also has clout.
For the Porsche brand, the real icon is easy, it’s the 911. Known for its superiority in the sports car environment, the 911 Carrera is the easiest automobile in production today to recognize. Its bubbled headlights and fascinating coupe-like curvatures make it stand out from the rest easily.
Our 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS tester came in Carmine Red, a deep red that was really easy on the eyes. Loaded with a 3.0-liter twin turbocharged boxer six-cylinder engine, the 911 Carrera offered 473 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of explosive torque. Zero to 60, we clocked in at 3.3 seconds.
With Porsche being an “option brand” meaning you can design yours to make it just how specific that you want it to your own liking, our tester came with some nice additions. The GTS interior came in exterior matching Carmine Red, the interior also optioned up the interior trim inlays as Matte Carbon Fiber. We noticed a front axle lift system and the Premium package, including Surround view, storage, power folding exterior mirrors, ambient lighting and a Bose surround sound system for under $4,000.
Whether driving around on those sunny days, or enjoying it as a daily commuter for executives, the 911 Carrera has purpose. With five different GTS variants, including two Cabriolet options, we see tons of improvements over prior generations. Including improved four-way seats and larger brakes, just to name a few. The center locking wheels and reduced sound deadening also were noticed on our tester and came with the lightweight package and only available on coupe models.
For 911 owners abound, clearly it’s about the power and style, but for onlookers it’s for the exclusivity and brand recognition that serves both sides of the wallet. In Grasso’s Garage, it is a mix of things as we love the 911’s iconic styling and incredible power. In typical Porsche fashion, cockpit like interior, low to the ground as all eyes are on your every move. To say this is a chart topper, it was very difficult to identify what could compare to the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, so yes, a chart topper it is.
