HOLIDAYMAKERS heading to Greece this summer have been given a boost after the country confirmed most of their Covid restrictions will be scrapped.
Coronavirus infections in Greece have reduced in recent weeks – and now officials have announced restrictions within the country will come to a halt from next month.
From May 1, people will no longer need to present a coronavirus vaccination certificate to enter bars, restaurants and other attractions.
Wearing masks indoors will no longer be mandatory as of June 1, with more information regarding the venues that still require them nearer the time.
All measures are set to be re-evaluated in September, after the peak tourist season.
The Greek Minister for Health, Thanos Plevris, confirmed the change in Covid restrictions for Brits wanting to visit the country this summer, but said the removal of entry restrictions are under consideration.
Tourists visiting Greece from the UK will still need to present a valid vaccination, recovery, or test certificate to enter the country.
Earlier this month, Greece relaxed its Covid vaccine rules in regards to vaccine certificates.
Greece has extended the validity from seven months to nine months, so the vaccine certificate lasts two months longer – making it easier for Brits to travel.
Unvaccinated Brits aged five and over need to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival or a rapid antigen test from an authorised laboratory taken within 24 hours prior to arrival.
Alternatively, unvaccinated travellers can show a certificate of recovery from Covid to enter.
On Tuesday 12 April just 15,000 new infections were reported in Greece.
Before the pandemic hit, Greece enjoyed a healthy amount of tourism – specifically from Britain and Germany – which delivered a strong boost to the economy.
In 2019 the country attracted 33million visitors.
