The San Antonio Spurs are keeping their greatest coach in franchise history around for a few more years.
After five NBA titles and three Coach of the Year awards, Popovich has cemented himself as perhaps the greatest coach in the modern NBA.
He’ll get to oversee the initial development of prized draft pick Victor Wembanyama, and it’s hard to argue that he hasn’t earned it.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Popovich has signed a five-year extension with the Spurs.

The new deal will make Popovich the league’s highest-paid head coach, as he’s set to earn more than $80 million according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
That puts him ahead of new Pistons coach Monty Williams, who signed a six-year, $78.5 million deal.
The last few years have been a clear rebuilding effort for the team, but Popovich has been responsible for the development of several good young players.
Dejounte Murray, Jakob Poeltl and Keldon Johnson are just some of the names that have benefitted from his instruction in the last several years.
The Spurs may not be back to their winning ways overnight, but there’s certainly a lot of optimism surrounding the team. Aside from Wembanyama, the Spurs like what they’ve seen from players like Jeremy Sochan and Devin Vassell.
With time – and with one of the best coaches to ever roam the sidelines – it’s reasonable to assume that the Spurs may find their way back to the playoffs sooner rather than later.
One thing is for sure: the NBA is definitely a better league with Gregg Popovich as a part of it.
